just remembering you've had an "and", when you're back to "or"makes the "or" mean more than it did before

Here's a list of my ten favorite CD's of the past year.

Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering
Her first album came out 35 years ago, so many people thought that she would never release another.  Over the past few years, she has become a touchstone for many of the neo-folk artists out there like Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, and Animal Collective (all of whom have guest spots on this record).  This album is beautiful.

The Decemberists present "Picaresque"
          Ok, so Colin Meloy is not the second coming of Jeff Magnum of Neutral Milk Hotel, but after this album I no longer expect him to be.  The Decemberists are now their own band, and despite all of their english major SAT vocabulary, their songs are easy to love and sing along with as well.  My favorite song is "On the Bus Mall", which is the Portland version of Skyway by The Replacements;

Deerhoof - The Runners Four
This is the most traditional bunch of songs Deerhoof has ever released.  This is not to say that the squealing guitar and yelped vocals are gone, but there are more discernable melodies than ever.  Your mom might even find something to like.  But so will you.  So don't worry.

LCD Soundsystem
Only the first disc qualifies as from really being from 2005.  The second disc contains all of the DFA singles from the past few years.  But the album itself is quite good.  James Murphy is not just the master of the dancefloor, he pulls off indie-rock pretty well too.  Listen to "Never as Tired as When I'm Waking Up".

Jamie Lidell - Multiply
Who would ever have thought that the best soul record of the year would be from a white english guy who usually releases very electronic music?  This is the album that Stevie Wonder wishes he would have released this year.  There is a lot of studio trickery going on underneath the surface, but don't worry about it.  Just have fun.

Low - The Great Destroyer
Alan Sparhawk of Low had a major breakdown this year and you can hear it coming on this record.  This is not your big brother's Low.  This is your mid-life crisis Low.  This is a record of the point when you make a choice whether or not to keep going in the direction you have been traveling or to leave all that you have worked for behind and starting anew.  Luckily for us, Alan didn't leave music behind.  But this album reminds us that it was close there for a second.

My Morning Jacket - Z
Someone called My Morning Jacket the American Radiohead.  Not true.  Someone else said they were the Rolling Stones for the new century.  Also a big fat lie.  What they are is a great band that is changing and growing with each new record.  The Lynyrd Skynryd poses from the last album have been left behind.  It is anyone's guess what the next album would bring.

Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
Yeah, yeah, I know.  Long solos.  Even longer songs.  Embracing their roots.  Led Zep etc. . . But this is still Sleater-Kinney.  Two great songwriters, singer and guitarists.  Janet is perfect as ever too.  As good as One Beat was, I don't miss the overt Bush-bashing.  This album has given up protesting Bush II, and like the rest of us is just trying as hard as it can to survive the next three-plus years.  (Can you believe there are still three more years!)

Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Spoon has clever lyrics, an energetic frontman, and bad luck with record labels.  On this album we learn: Spoon can dance (I Turn My Camera On).  Spoon can rock (Sister Jack).  We learn many other things as well.  And I hope that Spoon has learned not wait so long between releasing albums.

Wilco - Kicking Television: Live in Chicago
Yet another new line-up in Wilco.  And thanks to this album, we don't have to wait until next year for the studio album to come out to hear what they sound like.  Which is great because Nels Cline is the perfect foil to Jeff Tweedy.  Now Wilco has Tom Verlaine AND Richard Lloyd.  But given Tweedy's track record with musicians who are his equal, this might not last for long.  Who knows? By the time they record in the studio again, Wilco might be a different band.  At least we will always have this recording to remind us how great they were in 2005.

I don't want to wait.

Is anyone else amused by the fact that, in Brokeback Mountain, Michelle Williams is married to a closeted gay man, while her former Dawson's Creek co-star, Katie Holmes is married to a closeted gay man in real life?
